What happens when you Avoid Making Decisions

Do you know what happens when you avoid making decisions?

Listen here or read below to find out!

http://www.blogtalkradio.com/Jacqueline-Pigdon/2008/07/20/What-Happens-When-You-Avoid-Making-Decisions

When you have a decision to make and don’t make it you are making a decision in itself – to put it off! Delaying decisions often puts you at risk of someone or something else making the decision for you. When you’re the decision maker and say leader of your corporate company or executive team and you’re not making the decision then to put it simply you’re not doing your job.

The thing is once you have decided not to make a decision then it can become too late for you to decide. Usually when this happens it’s not the decision that you really wanted and you’re at a loss sometimes a very big loss. Then blame usually comes in that it wasn’t your fault or your choice and many people do this so they can’t be blamed for making the decision in case it turns out to be the wrong one. But then the questions is; who is directing and taking responsibility for your decisions both at work and in your personal life? You or everyone and everything else?

We all make millions of decisions everyday, at home and work, when out shopping etc and just one of them could be the difference between happiness and unhappiness, success and failure, life and death... People often think that their choices and thus decisions in life don’t really matter but where you are today is the direct result of all the decisions you have made to date. When you actually start making decisions you start to feel much more in control of your life, not so stressed about making decisions and it enables you to move forwards with speed and momentum compared to staying still wondering which way you should or shouldn’t go and thus often allowing life to pass you by or following decisions other people have made for you. So don’t delay a minute longer!

Here are 10 Top Tips to help you make the decisions you need to be making:

1. Sometimes you have to think on your feet so be prepared look ahead to what decisions may arise in the future. Doing this in a relaxed and clear state of mind can help a lot for when in the moment you can be negatively influenced or become stressed that you have to make it right now and then have no idea on what the right decision is.

2. Work out the pro’s and con’s of each outcome, get advice if and when you need it.

3. Ask yourself if I don’t make a decision now what could that result in? Regret that you didn’t take action when you could have? Or happy that you thought about it decided for yourself?

4. You may have already decided but have you acted upon that decision? For without action what good is the decision in itself?

5. Get advice from only trusted sources who have the same values and beliefs as you do. Don’t fall victim to asking absolutely everyone or someone who you don’t like the decisions they make for themselves.

6. Don’t make rash decisions especially if you have in the past and they’ve always failed. Look at your history when, how and what made you make your best and worst decisions in your life?

7. Ask yourself why are you REALLY putting off making a decision?

8. If you’ve made the wrong decision first acknowledge that you have for if you don’t you’ll just keep making the same ones. Quickly do what ever you can to rectify it.

9. Listen to your instinct, if you find you are telling yourself all the reasons why it won’t work out this can often be driven by fear. In comparison having to convince and justify why you should, could result in the wrong decision that you look back and ‘knew’ deep down it was wrong.

10. Remember sometimes the decision itself isn’t as important than actually just making one.

Do You Leave Work At The Office When On Holiday?

Here is a survey analysis from the Edmonton Journal on how most Canadian’s don’t know how to leave work at the office and what their most common work/holiday practices are:

http://www.canada.com/edmontonjournal/news/business/story.html?id=c35b833e-9888-4a2a-94b7-829191155525

I think it’s important to have a good break and completely forget about having to deal with any work issues however depending on your position sometimes checking in can be easier than having a million things piled up when you get back.

What are your views?

I know when I worked for a large organization I was so good at leaving my work behind that when asked what I did and where I worked while on holiday I once had to actually stop to think and ask myself.. yes good question… where do I work again?

However now that I run my own business I enjoy what I do so much that it never feels like work and so the odd interruption to attend to a business issue, email or call on the weekend or on holiday doesn’t bother me. We are a professionally run business who respect the people we work with and thus in turn they respect our time off back just the same.

THE CHALLENGES EXECUTIVES FACE TODAY...

Many executives in organisations to put it simply are extremely 'STRESSED OUT'! They maintain poor work/life balance because the richer they are the bigger the bills, the bigger the bills the bigger the responsibility, the bigger the responsibility the bigger the job, the bigger the job the bigger the money, the bigger the money so you can pay the bills!

So in an organisation here you are trying to work on home life as well as running the organisation itself. That's where we come in for in the truer sense on how your personal problems affect your behaviour which will then affect you as a person in the organisation.

Desk Rage Supersedes Road Rage….

Being an Executive Coach I see too often Senior Executives who have lashed out at other employees only to feel worse themselves afterwards and looking back with embarrassment and regrets.. yet they continue to do so without help and often feel powerless to change their outbursts. It’s here where we come in to help turn this around by highlighting to them the real and underlying causes to what is stressing them out.

Here is an interesting article from the OhmyNews International News Site that talks about how Desk Rage is now Superseding Road Rage….

Are you so busy thinking & worrying about the future that you’re never happy? How to Get Happy RIGHT NOW!

Listen to me talk on this topic, a segment from my Blog Talk Radio Show!

http://www.blogtalkradio.com/Jacqueline-Pigdon/2008/07/15/How-To-Get-Happy-Right-NOW

I often hear people say I’ll be happy when….! But the question I ask is ‘Why can’t you be happy right now?’ I believe life is all about the journey because once you have come to the end… then what? So if you are one of those people who are often saying “I’ll be happy when… I get a promotion, that executive or corporate job, find the right partner, get a better lifestyle, lose weight, win that race, are rich, or when it’s finally Friday!” You might want to start looking at what you have now and dig deep and find some happiness, lots of happiness such as what you actually have right here and now!

Have you ever felt yourself looking back thinking the preparation was actually a fun part of your achievement? Sometimes the most fun part and where your fondest memories lie? The getting ready for a big night out, planning a party, training with your squad on camp, cooking the food for a dinner party, is just as important and as much fun as the event itself! Perhaps preparing for a holiday isn’t quite better than the actual holiday! But it is for some who don’t appreciate being on the holiday when they are actually there! Looking forward to things brings hope but don’t lay your happiness upon the future because what if it never comes? You will forever be chasing happiness…

So enjoy your spiritual life journey I say! The here and now! The longer one’s life, the more apparent it becomes that life is not a destination but rather a journey. Your life journey can be fun and exciting and is to be enjoyed. A journey can be thought of as a process or course likened to traveling, a passage: the journey of life. It is something you must do to get where it is that you do want to go. Having goals and plans and achieving great things is fantastic and needed for right path, direction and growth but make sure you’re having fun while you’re getting to your goals. Be in the present, let go of the past and stop trying to hurry up and land in the future. So for those who sometime say I’ll be happy when…

Get happy right now by following these 5 steps:

  1. Appreciate what you have and the unique life and spiritual journey that you’re on
  2. If you’re not happy change and take action! It’s up to you!
  3. Be patient
  4. Be in the present at all times
  5. Remember nothing is guaranteed except for this moment.. a moment in time
Time stands still when you’re living in the moment and happy on your journey in life. Appreciating this time for what and all that it is, your days and weekends too will instantly feel like you have all the time in the world.. now wouldn’t you like that!

Do you ‘have to’ work? You may as well love it then! Here’s how…

Click here to listen to me talking about how to Love Your Job!

http://www.blogtalkradio.com/Jacqueline-Pigdon/2008/07/06/Love-Your-Job

I believe life is really too short to be spending so much of your time doing something you don’t love! I think there is a job or career out there for everyone to love if they only searched or could see it. You might well already be in the job you love and if you are then that’s fantastic, or maybe you are and you just can’t see it or you spend most of your day at work just looking at the negatives or you are in the wrong job for you.

If you aren’t happy with your job, a good place to start is with your perception on why you actually go to work. Is it is because you feel you have to or because you actually want to? Now if you really didn’t want to go to work you wouldn’t and perhaps you don’t like your job but you certainly like what it brings you. You might like to show some appreciation for the fact that the position is helping you to pay your mortgage, support your family, educate your children or take you to exciting places around the world. Here are some tips to get you loving your job today!

Appreciate what you have! Your nice office, corporate or executive environment you work in, the people you work with, the hours and perhaps flexibility of these hours, the friendships you have made as well as the skills and experience you have gained.

Walk into work with a happy and positive attitude and try and learn to keep it all day no matter what - everyday! We all work with people who might frustrate or stress us out but why allow them to ruin so much of your day? Deal with them and any issues that arise and get on with the things you enjoy more. If you’re not in your ideal job or career right now and sitting there doom and gloom and not doing anything about it to change then get positive and motivated about your future and start thinking and doing something about it - as chances are no one else is going to do it for you.

Steps to finding your ideal job:

  1. Think about what you love that if you had all the money in the world and didn’t need to work but still wanted to what would you do?
  2. Highlight what your strengths are and ask some friends/colleagues what they think you’d be great at.
  3. Update your CV and look for opportunities within your current company, job ads or ask in your current network of any leads to the perfect job for you.
  4. Establish a minimum criteria for you to move to a new role e.g. Salary, hours, location, responsibilities etc.
  5. Picture yourself in your ideal job. Ask yourself are you lacking in experience/training in these areas and if so start researching some courses or ways in which to develop these skills.

Not liking your job can lead to stress and unhappiness and can be wasting precious time on earth. Working because you feel you have to and all the time wishing you didn’t have to be there or counting down the hours is not a great way to be living your working life. It’s essential to do something you love as here is where you will give the best job and gain the most satisfaction.

If you don’t like your current job you might like to consider looking into another position within your current company or elsewhere. Recruiters are currently in need of quality candidates and employees like never before. Find an agency you like and form a relationship with them. Make sure you’re honest about your aspirations, as the consultant will help you identify skills gaps and advise you about changing careers or moving into new roles if that’s your goal. Many recruiters now take an active role in managing their candidate careers, which means as your skills expand, they’ll help you move into another position that utilises this knowledge. Each move is another stepping stone to achieving your ultimate goal.

There is no time to stand still! While you’re readying yourself to the change, seek ways to add enjoyment to your current role or career following the above tips. Also try to inject interest and fun into your work tasks and appreciate that people you work with even if you don’t’ like them! Find their good qualities as this will make your heart bigger and kinder. When you’re in a state of gratitude you will only focus on the good things around you and this can help you to see the old chores as actually pleasurable activities and also allows you to shine and do the best job you can at the same time.
